Good afternoon,
As you are aware the recent back filling of curbs following the recent paving project has resulted in a weed infestation in some areas. The weed has been identified as Jimson Weed. Jimson weed is an annual herb which grows up to 5 feet tall. It has a pale green stem with spreading branches. Leaves are ovate with green or purplish coloration, coarsely serrated along edges, and 3 to 8 inches long. Flowers are white or purple with a 5-pointed corolla up to four inches long and set on short stalks in the axils of branches. Seeds are contained in a hard, spiny capsule, about 2 inches in diameter, which splits length wise into four parts when ripe. All parts of Jimsonweed are poisonous. Leaves and seeds are the usual source of poisoning, but are rarely eaten do to its strong odor and unpleasant taste.
We have consulted with our contractors and the DEEP and have been advised by DEEP to use a selective herbicide and destroy all plants. We are making arrangements with All Habitat, a DEEP licensed contractor to perform the work as soon as practical in the Town Right of Way. We have not had any reports of any issues to date but are asking everyone in the affected areas to be aware. If you have any further questions please feel free to contact the Department.
