We are thrilled to announce the $12 million Clinton Train Station renovations begin this week.
This newly constructed station is part of an overall effort by the Connecticut Department of Transportation to improve safety and operations along Shoreline East. This news is very welcome since the funding for our station has been in question, after many starts and stops stemming since the original 2011 public hearing. Funding shortfalls at the State level and easement issues have plagued the project. Last December the project was all but cancelled, but with our intense advocating with the state executive branch and with Connecticut DOT, on the importance of this economic driver for our Town my administration was able to turn tides.
The timing is perfect with the completion of the Route 81 Corridor Study and the option holder at Unilever signaling their commitment to a future development of the former Unilever/Pond’s site. Local businesses should benefit from the increased activity at the Station as well as future expanded use. The Station project was awarded to Lawrence Brunoli, Inc.
Clinton directly benefits from:
- Access from both sides of the railway
- A pedestrian overpass allowing for commuters to park or be dropped off on either side of the tracks
- A commuter shelter area and convenient commuter drop off area
- Increased free parking and enhanced lighting
- Covered bicycle parking
- Digital signs for real time information
- Dual elevator service
- Fully ADA compliant station
- 6-8 more trains added to the timetable for Clinton
- Additional parking on the north side of the tracks
- Approximately 611 days for completion of the project.
As more information becomes available we will put it on the Town website and social media, including details on the ground breaking and, including how renovations could impact commuters and traffic flow in/and around Downtown Clinton will be forthcoming. Clinton town government is working closely with CTDOT to ensure local commuters are accommodated. No changes to Route 1 or Route 81 are anticipated.
