When the Department of Motor Vehicles receives a check for a registration renewal, the DMV will cash the check but the DMV will not renew the registration if you have not paid your property taxes or resolved any other compliance issues such as emissions testing and/or an issue with insurance. You can check out the status of your registration at the CT DMV portal. Payments made through out town website do not get processed until the next business day in the tax office. If you are late in paying your motor vehicle taxes and pay online here on our website, you will need to pay by credit card or debit card to obtain a DMV release on the next business day. The tax office does not take credit cards in the office. If you pay in the office, you must pay with bank check, money order or cash to get an immediate release for the DMV.

For those of you who sent in a check to the DMV and had a compliance issue(s), the Department of Motor Vehicles will once a week review "paid" vehicle registrations that were held up due to compliance issues. The tax office release does not automatically make your registration valid.
