The Connecticut Department of Transportation does not perform bridge inspection on bridges that had an opening of less than 20 feet. Last year the State requested a list of all such bridges in Town. The Town inventoried and inspected all such bridges and submitted the report to the State. The State subsequently hire Dewberry Engineering to follow up on all under 20ft bridges. During our inventory process, significant deficiencies were noted on the report for the Hurd Road Bridge. Like most of our bridges, this one has been subjected to multiple floods and damage caused by accidents. Bridges under 20 feet are not current part of the State or Federal local bridge program therefore the Town must assume the cost of replacing the bridge. We have provided and estimate based upon projected cost for similar bridges in Tow. We are requesting to proceed with this project. If the bridge should become eligible for the grant programs we will make application.
Waterside Lane Bridge Deck Repair
The 2014 Connecticut Department of Transportation inspection report noted deficiencies on the deck surface on the Waterside Lane Bridge. We had DTC look at the reports and the original bridge design and have determined that the bridge should have an asphalt wearing surface. We have developed estimates for the work and are requesting funds to repair the deck and install an asphalt wearing surface.
DTC was appointed the Town Engineers in 2016 after a RFP (request for professional services) process that resulted in multiple response from firm across the area. After an interview process DTC was awarded the work has acted in the capacity of Town Engineering Consultants for over a year.
